John Newbigin, Chair
John is Chair of Creative England, and was previously Chair of the RSA network Screen England. He is a freelance journalist and strategic consultant for the cultural industries. John serves on a number of boards including First Light Films and is also Chairman of Culture 24, an online gateway to the UK’s cultural sector with news and listings for 3,500 museum, galleries and heritage sites. John was Head of Corporate Relations for Channel 4 TV from 2000-2005. Prior to that, he was Special Adviser to the Secretary of State for Culture, Rt Hon Chris Smith MP from 1997 to 1999, during which time he was closely involved in developing the UK government’s first policies for the creative industries. His previous roles include Executive for David Puttnam’s film company Enigma (1992-97), Policy Adviser to Neil Kinnock (1986-92), youth worker and Director of the London programme for International Youth Year (1985). He is a Visiting Professor at the University of East London, and other universities internationally.
Andrew is Managing Director of Illumina Digital, responsible for the strategic direction and presentation of the company to key clients and partners and in industry and stakeholder forums. Andrew also takes a role in the creative development of key Illumina projects and is MD of Touch Illumina Ltd, the multiplatform joint venture company with Touch Productions. Andrew is a Board member of TRC Media in Glasgow (formerly The Research Centre) and a past board member of Creative Skillset. He is currently Chair of the National Skills Council for Digital Media and an advisor on the creative industries to the Technology Strategy Board.
Jeff is the creative force and digital visionary behind Matmi, the award-winning branded entertainment specialists. Before viral marketing had a name, Matmi’s Monster Poolside Sumo had gone global, racking up millions of plays. Jeff realised that engaging consumers with discreetly branded online games was highly influential – and much more powerful than traditional online advertising. Since 2001, Matmi has worked with brands including United Airlines, EMI, Vimto, ASDA, ITV and Parlophone. As a digital strategist, Jeff’s opinions – not always popular or mainstream – are sought by clients, major advertising agencies and his peers.
Erica is a partner at summ.it, an accountancy, HR and IT business with offices in Manchester and Mauritius. Erica has held several Finance Director and Head of Finance roles within media having worked for BBC Radio, MTV, 20th Century Fox and for Chello Media as Head of Finance for their Video on Demand European division. Erica now concentrates on providing strategic Finance Director support and accounting services to SMEs. Erica specialises in helping media and technology companies raise finance, produce meaningful management information and strategic plans and improve profitability. She is an experienced company director, company secretary and media finance director, with a special interest in company direction and board performance.
Richard Klein is Head of Factual at ITV. He became the Controller of BBC Four in December 2008. He joined the BBC in 1996 as a series producer and moved into commissioning, becoming a senior commissioning executive and then Commissioning Editor for Documentaries in March 2005. In 2007, he became the BBC’s Head of Independent Commissioning, Knowledge. In this role he oversaw all commissioning from independent production companies across features, arts, music, religion, specialist factual and documentaries. Richard has taken an innovative approach to multi-platform, with rich online offerings for Britain From Above, Amazon and The Long Way Down. Richard studied English at Aberdeen University and his background is in print journalism, before he moved into TV.
Bill is Executive Director of Reel Solutions (Film) LLP, a partnership of film industry professionals with experience in cinemas, festivals and education. He works with Cambridge Film Festival, Sheffield Doc/Fest and other film festivals across the UK. Formerly Creative Director at Showroom and Workstation in Sheffield, one of the UK’s leading independent cinemas, he was previously the Head of Film at the National Media Museum in Bradford until April 2008, where over 16 years he developed the film delivery through two cinemas plus IMAX and the creation of the Bradford Film Festival, Bradford Animation Festival and the Bite the Mango Film Festival (then the largest Black and Asian film festival in Europe). Bill was one of the key people delivering the successful bid for Bradford to be UNESCO’s first global City of Film and has been on the board of the Yorkshire Screen Commission and Screen Yorkshire as well as being chair of Animated Limited, an animation production company.
Jonnie Turpie MBE
Jonnie Turpie founded Maverick Television in 1994 and now heads up the company’s digital media business as part of the All3Media group which Maverick joined in 2007. He has initiated many of the company’s digital and online projects including Embarrassing Bodies, Ideasfactory, 4Talent and Teachers TV. Jonnie led the consortium that secured and delivers the breakthrough digital health service for the West Midlands – NHS local – and has pioneered the use of new technology in television, both in the use of small-format cameras and high-end post-production graphics. This digital approach led to many early successes, such as the much-loved Trade Secrets series and award-winning DV dramas Blazed, The Visit and Nightshift. Jonnie is a director of First Light Movies, Birmingham Ormiston Academyand a Fellow of Warwick University. He was awarded an MBE in the Queens 2010 New Year Honours list for services to international sales. He Chaired and subsequently Executive Chaired Screen WM from 2002–2008.
Charles founded the Twofour Group in 1988, one of the UK’s largest creative agencies, and chairs the boards of Twofour’s companies – Broadcast, Digital, Rocket Science and Twofour Arabia. Charles chaired the UK independent trade body Pact for two years. A long-standing member of Pact, he has also chaired its Nations and Regions Policy Group and is now a member of the Pact Patrons Group. Charles was awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Technology & Communication South Region in 2007 and the 2010 Royal Television Society Devon and Cornwall Centre Award for Outstanding Achievement. Twofour was voted the UK’s Best Independent Production Company at the Broadcast Awards 2010 and it also won a place in the 2009 Sunday Times Microsoft Tech Track Top 100 companies, which ranks Britain’s fastest growing private sector technology companies. Charles was a member of the South West Screen Board from 2008-2011.
