BLOG: RECORD FILMING PRODUCTION
YEAR FOR GREATER MANCHESTER

In the first of a series of blogs by Creative England staff across the English regions, Bobby Cochrane, Creative England Production Liaison Manager (North), based in Creative England’s MediaCityUK office, writes about a record production year for Greater Manchester.

2011 proved to be a fantastic year for film and TV production in Greater Manchester, surpassing the impressive production figures from 2010. Last year saw more than 190 productions choosing the city as their filming location, which resulted in 1,370 filming days. This activity has generated millions of pounds of inward investment into the local economy.

It also proved to be a fantastic year for TV drama production with 20 dramas shooting around Greater Manchester, including:

  • The Body Farm (BBC)
  • Exile (AbbottVision / Red Production Company / BBC)
  • Scott & Bailey (Red Production Company / ITV)
  • Shameless (Company Pictures / C4)
  • Waterloo Road (Shed Productions / BBC)

2012 is set to be another bumper year for drama production in Manchester with five dramas currently in production, and another six in pre-production which start filming in February/March. Keep visiting the Creative England website for production news and information.

2011 was an amazingly busy year for the locations and production services department here in Greater Manchester. It's my job to make sure that whatever the production they receive a professional service and a film friendly welcome to the area, which means production companies return year on year.

2012 doesn't show any signs of slowing down and I'm looking forward to supporting even more production to shoot here. Also, don’t miss the brand new Sky Atlantic drama, Hit & Miss (AbbottVision / Red Production Company / Sky Atlantic), which airs on the Sky Atlantic channel later this year.

The drama stars Golden Globe winning actress Chloe Sevigny and was created by BAFTA award winning and Manchester-born screenwriter, Paul Abbott. The production filmed around Greater Manchester and was assisted directly by the Location and Production Services Department.

Creative England provides support to all kinds of productions to ensure each shoot goes ahead smoothly and Greater Manchester remains a premiere production base. Creative England works hard to promote Greater Manchester and the wider region to national and international production companies, increasing production levels year on year for the region.
