We're excited to announce details of six greenlit comedy short films as part of iShorts+ Funny Girls. To find out more about each project, visit our showcase page.
Creative England’s comedy short film initiative is run in partnership BFI NET.WORK alongside Big Talk and Baby Cow, two of the most established and successful comedy Film and Television production companies in the UK.
Over 240 teams applied to the nationwide search, designed to find bold, entertaining and original stories from exciting new female directors across England, all with a burning ambition to build a successful career in screen comedy.
To find the final six, a selection of shortlisted teams attended bespoke seminars with some of the UK’s best comedy talent including Damon Beesley and Simon Bird ('The Inbetweeners'), Tess Morris ('Man Up'), and Declan Lowney ('Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa') as part of a two-day comedy residential workshop at the Brighton Talent Centre.
Following further competitive creative sessions with development executives, professional comedy script editors, and creative improvisation collective The Storyliners, six comedy short film projects emerged victorious.
Each ‘Funny Girl’ team will receive a £10,000 from Creative England towards the budget of their short film, alongside an additional financial contribution towards casting and rehearsals, and professional mentoring from top film and television comedy talent.
Celine Haddad, Senior Film Executive at Creative England, said: "We’ve been overwhelmed by the response to iShorts+ Funny Girls. Working with the filmmakers has been enormous fun and the collaboration with Baby Cow and Big Talk very rewarding for all involved.
"We’re incredibly excited to give the six selected filmmakers a platform to showcase and further hone their unique comedy voice. It is an eclectic slate – the shorts couldn’t be more diverse in execution, tone and style - we can’t wait to see how they take shape over the summer."
Both the original iShorts and the iShorts+ programmes are delivered through Creative England's Sheffield and Brighton Talent Centres as part of the BFI NET.WORK.
