Knowledge Bites Connects Students To The UK Film and Television Industry

Last week pupils at Cronton Sixth Form College in Widnes gathered to take part in Knowledge Bites, a day of events aimed at highlighting pathways to the UK film industry.

Run by Puma Events and Training on behalf of Creative England, this day-long programme invited key speakers to share their professional industry advice with students and help them form a better understanding of employment options in the UK film and television industries. Six further Knowledge Bites training days are due to take place across the North of England in 2014/15.

Guest speakers at Friday’s event included freelance photographer James Stack, graphic designer and screen branding specialist Roger Osborne, illustrator and in-set designer Sara Cullen and producer Christopher Wood. All regularly work for Lime Pictures, the production house behind shows such as Hollyoaks and The Only Way is Essex, but they also highlighted the importance of working in a variety of places and stretching your horizons. They also discussed connectivity between television, film and multi-platform roles, ever-changing work environments and how photography and graphic design fit into the wider picture of film and television production.

Twenty photography and graphic design students were joined by 9 drama students and under the guidance of guest photographer James Stack, set up scenes from which the students took stills. For many of the students attending, the concepts around working in film and creative media were new. However that didn't stop them engaging in show and tell sessions and asking questions to find out more about the various roles and learn how they can get involved.
