Creative England’s Production Services team worked with the production’s Location Team to support the production across the location searches and filming across the English regions, as well as support sourcing regional crew for the production.
“The attention to detail in the making of ‘Phantom Thread’ was simply extraordinary…ultimately no corner of the country would be left unexplored to find the perfect location for each and every scene. A nationwide connection to local knowledge and expertise was essential – Creative England helped provide all of that and more. They were a tremendous support and an invaluable resource. To have the luxury of choice we ultimately had and to be able to indulge such a level of scrutiny in those choices is a testament to the breadth and scope of the incredible locations available across the English regions.”
Jason Wheeler, Supervising Location Manager, Phantom Thread
“With our fantastic talent pool and stunning locations, it’s little surprise the film and TV industry is booming in Yorkshire right now, growing faster than anywhere else in the UK. We’re delighted the work of Creative England brought this A list production to our wonderful county, bringing with it so many benefits to the local economy and putting Yorkshire deservedly at spotlight.”
Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire
With its evocative postwar London setting and picturesque escapes to the British countryside, Phantom Thread is steeped in romantic atmosphere. The design team made a choice early on in the production to employ authentic spaces wherever possible rather than re-create them inside a studio or soundstage.
The production made use of the stunning North Yorkshire Coast, including Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes and the dramatic coastal views over Ravenscar which all feature in the official trailer.
North Yorkshire Coast Yorkshire Locations:
Special thanks to filming partner Scarborough Borough Council for their support with key filming permissions whilst filming on the North Yorkshire Coast.
In this exquisite film we see 1950s England cleverly recreated using a range of period locations from across the English regions. The untouched beauty of the North Yorkshire coast looks particularly stunning on screen. ‘Phantom Thread’ is one of many high-profile film and TV productions that have enjoyed the wealth of historic filming locations the regions have to offer; couple this with highly skilled regional crew and a film friendly ethos – the English regions truly are an exceptional place to film.

“Film Tourism is hugely important to the Yorkshire Coast as it not only supports boosting the local economy during filming but it also provides a platform from which to showcase the beauty of the area. Last year we received in excess of 80 enquiries ranging from TV Shows, Dramas, Commercials, Music Videos and Feature Films… Working closely with Creative England we were truly delighted that the producers of The Phantom Thread chose the Yorkshire Coast for the filming and we hope that it is a huge success”.
Janet Deacon, Tourism & Corporate Marketing Manager for Scarborough Council and Area Director for Welcome to Yorkshire
The Blackpool Tower Ballroom in Blackpool, Lancashire also features in the film, lending its iconic performance space to double as a circus.
The film production also shot in London.
Phantom Thread arrives in UK cinemas on the 2nd February, and has been nominated for four BAFTA awards and six Academy Awards.
